Where is Dimethylethanolamine extracted?

Dimethylethanolamine (DMAE) is extracted from natural gas liquids (NGL). NGL is a mixture of hydrocarbons found in natural gas. They are separated from natural gas through a process called fractionation.

The DMAE is then extracted from the NGL through a process called distillation. Distillation is the process of separating liquids based on their boiling points. DMAE has a boiling point of 160 degrees Celsius, so it is easily separated from the other components of NGL.

DMAE is also produced synthetically by the reaction of ethylene oxide and dimethylamine. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst such as hydrochloric acid.

DMAE is a colorless, viscous liquid with an amine-like odor. Miscible with water and organic solvents. DMAE is used in a variety of applications including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals.
