Waterborne Polyurethane

Waterborne polyurethane is a clear water soluble finish used to protect wood surfaces. It is made by mixing water, resin and pigments. Water-based polyurethane is less toxic and easier to clean up than oil-based polyurethane. It also dries faster and is less likely to turn yellow over time.

Waterborne polyurethane is available in a variety of finishes including gloss, semi-gloss and matte. It can be applied with a brush, roller or sprayer.

To apply water-based polyurethane, first clean the wood surface with a mild detergent and water. Then, lightly sand the surface to create a smooth surface for the polyurethane to adhere to. Wipe off any sanding dust with a damp cloth.

Follow manufacturer’s directions and apply polyurethane in thin coats. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next.

After applying desired number of coats, allow polyurethane to fully cure. This may take a few days, depending on the type of polyurethane you use.

Water-based polyurethane is a great way to protect wood surfaces and add an aesthetic finish. It is easy to apply and clean up, and is less toxic than oil-based polyurethane.
