Tetraisopropyl methylene diphosphate is an organic intermediate that can be prepared from diisopropyl phosphite and carbon disulfide through a one-step reaction. There are reports in the literature that methylene diphosphate tetraisopropyl diphosphate can be used to prepare highly flame-retardant cable sheathing tubes.
Preparation[1]
Diisopropyl phosphite (4 mL, 24 mmol) was added dropwise to a suspension of NaH (28.8 mmol, 1.2 equiv) in dry THF (25 mL) at -5 °C to 0 °C under nitrogen. Then, the mixture was stirred at 20 °C for 3 h, and carbon disulfide (9.6 mmol, 0.4 equiv) was added dropwise. The color of the reaction mixture changed to brown. Stirring was continued for 3 hours, then the mixture was poured into saturated solution of NH4Cl and extracted with Et2O.
